Zinc Sulphate heptahydrate is a white crystalline granular powder can be used as a simple zinc supplement for animal nutrition.
Zinc Sulphate product can be added to animal foodstuff in order to counteract zinc deficiencies.
However it is most commonly used as a foot bath solution for cows and sheep.
When mixed with water Zinc Sulphate acts by killing bacteria, hardening the hoof and aiding healing.
The dilution rate for both copper sulphate and zinc sulphate for general prevention and treatment of mild foot problems is 10pc.
That means that for every 10 litres of solution in the footbath you should add 1kg of either copper or zinc sulphate.
The advantage of using either copper or zinc sulphate is that these products can be reused over a period of time (provided that they are not excessively soiled or diluted by rainfall.
For treating footrot in sheep you can increase the ratio to 1kg to 9ltrs of water.
A daily treatment over 5 to 7 days should clear the problem so long as the sheep are moved to fresh pasture after treatment.
For the most serious cases you can increase the dilution to a maximum of 20% dilution rate.
The depth of the solution should be 5 cm or greater.
If the foot bath solution becomes badly fouled with dirt and faeces, it should be discarded.
It is good practice to measure the strength of the footbath solution with a hydrometer at least twice daily.
For a 10 percent solution, it should be 1050 – 1060 units on the hydrometer.
If too low, add 2.5 kg zinc sulphate/100 litres of water to increase the strength of the solution by 10 units.
If too high, add 25 litres of water/100 litres to decrease by 10 units.
Strain the solution through a stocking before measuring.
Hydrometers that indicate the strength of the solution are available at battery retailers and some rural merchandisers. Zinc sulphate can settle out in the bath overnight.
It should be mixed with a broom before each day’s foot bathing.
